Welcome to the website of the SUSTAIN research program!
Our research focuses on creating sustainable work in contemporary working life. With sustainable work we mean work that sustains individual employees by allowing them to develop and thrive at work. Such sustainable work makes it possible for employees to keep on functioning in healthy, meaningful, and productive ways in the challenging working life. Sustainable work also makes it possible for employees alone and collectively to make a positive contribution in their work in terms of economic, ecological, and social outcomes. Our research also focuses on sustainable work organizations – we are interested to see how whole work organizations can function in a sustainable manner by building on the development and growth of the resources engaged in their operations: in human, social, economic, and ecological resources.
The main questions we address are:
- What defines a sustainable employee and a sustainable work organization?
- What sustains people at work?
- How is it possible to promote the sustainability of individuals and social collectives at work?
- How can people contribute to sustainable society and environment through their work?
The SUSTAIN research program contains too main parts:
- It is a collaborative researcher network with members from Finland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, and Australia;
- It contains national studies on sustainable work and sustainable work systems in all these countries.
On this website, you will find information on the SUSTAIN researcher network and on the Finnish research project on human and social sustainability in working life.
